How to Calculate Your Soul Urge Number

The vowels of the full birth name, with the rule for Y, reduced only when the total is not a master number.

TL;DR

Soul Urge is the vowels only. Y is a vowel unless the next letter in the word is A, E, I, O, or U. Then the free Soul Urge calculator. The Foundation Soul Blueprint is $11.11.

Your Soul Urge number is the vowels in your full birth name, added as one sum and then reduced.

Consonants stay out. If the vowel total, or any step after it, is 11, 22, 33, or 44, you stop. Those four are the master numbers in this method.

The letter table is often called Pythagorean. The history is narrower than the nickname. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy says Philolaus, a fifth-century Pythagorean, emphasized the role of number in understanding the cosmos (Pythagoreanism).

The same encyclopedia says a later tradition treated Pythagoras, with no historical justification, as the source of Greek philosophy as a whole (Pythagoreanism). The encyclopedia's entry on Pythagoras says he wrote nothing (Pythagoras). This page does not borrow a vowel chart from either entry. It shows how The Healer's Code reads the vowels of a birth name, as reflection rather than a prediction.

Which letters you keep

Use the full name on the birth record, including every middle name. Mark the vowels and leave the consonants for the Personality number. A nickname is not this sum. A name you took later can be read on its own. It does not replace the Soul Urge in the core chart.

The vowel letters are A, E, I, O, and U, plus Y when the rule below says so.

Their values are A 1, E 5, I 9, O 6, U 3, and Y 7. The rest of the alphabet, for the full name, is the same repeating table: A 1 through I 9, J 1 through R 9, S 1 through Z 8.

Y is a vowel unless the next letter in the same word is A, E, I, O, or U. Then Y is a consonant, and it does not enter this sum. A Y that ends a word is a vowel, whatever the next word starts with.

Write the birth name and circle the vowels before you add. A skipped middle name is the usual reason a hand total will not match the calculator. Settle the spelling first. Then add the circled letters into one raw total. Do not reduce each word on its own and then add those reduced pieces.

A worked vowel sum

Take ANNA MARIE.

The letters are A 1, N 5, N 5, A 1, M 4, A 1, R 9, I 9, E 5.

The vowels are the three A's, the I, and the E: 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 5 = 17. There is no Y, so the partition is plain. 17 is not 11, 22, 33, or 44. Reduce it: 1 + 7 = 8. The Soul Urge is 8, written 17/8.

The consonants of the same name sum to 23, and every letter sums to 40. 17 + 23 = 40. That check is how you know the vowels were marked cleanly. The consonant total is a different number, the Personality number, written 23/5. The full name is the Expression number, written 40/4. Soul Urge is only the 17.

In this method, 8 is The Powerhouse. Read it as a lens for the wanting under the name, not as a job title and not as a forecast. If it does not describe what you actually reach for, keep the arithmetic and set the label down.

A vowel total can also stop on a master. 29, 38, 47, and 56 each reduce to 11, and 11 stays. A vowel sum of 38 is written 38/11. You do not continue to 3 + 8 = 11 and then 1 + 1 = 2. The Soul Urge is 11, and the root it rests in is 2, which is why you may also see 11/2. The number you keep is 11. The same stop holds for a raw vowel total of 11, 22, 33, or 44. 22 is written 22/4. 33 is written 33/6. 44 is written 44/8.

How Y is counted

EMILY shows a vowel Y. The Y ends the word, so it is a vowel worth 7. The vowels are E 5, I 9, and Y 7, which is 21. 2 + 1 = 3, written 21/3. The consonants M and L are 4 + 3 = 7, and they are not part of the Soul Urge. The whole name is 28, then 10, then 1, which is the Expression number, not this one.

A single bright gold mark among cooler violet points

MAYA shows a consonant Y. Y is followed by A, so Y is worth 7 inside the consonant sum, not here. The vowels are the two A's: 1 + 1 = 2. The Soul Urge is 2. If you had counted that Y as a vowel, the total would be wrong, and the Personality number would lose the 11 it actually holds.

Two people who "say the name and guess" will split on names like these. The rule is the lookahead, not the guess. The free Soul Urge calculator uses the same rule.

Where this number sits

Expression uses every letter. Personality uses the consonants only. Soul Urge is the private half. They are allowed to disagree. Expression can describe a capacity you put into work. Soul Urge can describe a wanting that work does not feed. Both can be true. Do not average them into a fourth number.

Three quiet pools of light, one warmer than the others

This number does not use your birth date. Month, day, and year belong to other positions.

Run the vowels on the free Soul Urge calculator. When you want Soul Urge read beside Expression, Personality, Life Path, Birth Day, and Personal Year, by hand, the next step is the Foundation Soul Blueprint. The Foundation Soul Blueprint is $11.11.

Frequently asked

Which letters count?

The vowels in your full birth name. Consonants are the Personality number, not this one.

Does Y count as a vowel?

Y is a vowel unless the next letter in the same word is A, E, I, O, or U. A Y at the end of a word is a vowel. EMILY counts Y. MAYA does not.

Is the Soul Urge the same as the Expression number?

No. Expression uses every letter. Soul Urge uses vowels only. On the worked name ANNA MARIE, the vowels are 17/8 and the full name is 40/4.

Does a later name replace this number?

The Soul Urge in the core chart stays with the birth name. A name you took later is its own reading, not a silent swap.
