TL;DR
Add every letter of the full birth name. Stop if the sum is 11, 22, 33, or 44. Then use the free Expression calculator. The Foundation Soul Blueprint is $11.11.

Your Expression number is every letter of your full birth name, added as one sum and then reduced.

Vowels and consonants both go in. If the sum, or any step after it, is 11, 22, 33, or 44, you stop. Those four are the master numbers in this method.
People call the letter table Pythagorean. That name needs a boundary. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy says Philolaus, a fifth-century Pythagorean, emphasized the role of number in understanding the cosmos (Pythagoreanism).
The same encyclopedia says a later tradition treated Pythagoras, with no historical justification, as the source of Greek philosophy as a whole (Pythagoreanism). The encyclopedia's entry on Pythagoras says he wrote nothing (Pythagoras). The table on this page is The Healer's Code method. It is a way to reflect on a name. It is not a document he left, and it is not a prediction of your work, your health, or your future.
What you add
Use the full name on the birth record, including every middle name. A nickname is not this number. A name you took later is a separate reading, not a silent replacement for the core chart. Spaces, hyphens, and apostrophes add nothing. Letters do.

Each letter takes one value. The alphabet runs 1 through 9, then starts again.

A 1, B 2, C 3, D 4, E 5, F 6, G 7, H 8, I 9. J 1, K 2, L 3, M 4, N 5, O 6, P 7, Q 8, R 9. S 1, T 2, U 3, V 4, W 5, X 6, Y 7, Z 8.
Y is a vowel unless the next letter in the same word is A, E, I, O, or U. Then Y is a consonant. A Y at the end of a word is a vowel, even if the next word starts with a vowel. EMILY keeps Y as a vowel. The vowels E, I, and Y are 5 + 9 + 7 = 21, which reduces to 3. The whole name is 28, then 10, then 1. MAYA treats Y as a consonant, because Y is followed by A in the same word.
Add every letter into one raw total. Do not reduce each name part first and then add those pieces. The raw total is what you reduce, and you check for a master at every step.
A worked birth name
Take ANNA MARIE, two words, as they would sit on a birth record.

A is 1, N is 5, N is 5, A is 1, M is 4, A is 1, R is 9, I is 9, E is 5.
The vowels are A, A, A, I, and E: 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 5 = 17. That raw vowel total is the Soul Urge. 1 + 7 = 8, written 17/8.
The consonants are N, N, M, and R: 5 + 5 + 4 + 9 = 23. That raw consonant total is the Personality number. 2 + 3 = 5, written 23/5.
All nine letters: 17 + 23 = 40. Add them from scratch as a check: 1 + 5 + 5 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 5 = 40. The two raw halves must equal the full sum. If they do not, a letter was counted twice or left out.
40 is not 11, 22, 33, or 44, so you reduce it. 4 + 0 = 4. The Expression number is 4, written 40/4. In this method, 4 is The Architect. Read that as a lens for the kind of capacity the full name carries, the talent you can put into work and craft. If the label does not fit the life you have actually lived, keep the number and set the label down.
When the sum is a master number
Check the total at every step. If it is 11, 22, 33, or 44, stop. Do not reduce a master because a single digit is easier to say. You still name the root it rests in. You do not replace the master with that root.

MICHAEL is the clear case. M is 4, I is 9, C is 3, H is 8, A is 1, E is 5, L is 3. Those letters sum to 33. 33 is a master number, so the Expression stays 33, written 33/6. The 6 is 3 + 3, the root under the master. The number you keep is 33, The Master Teacher, not 6.
The same stop applies to 11, 22, and 44. DAVID sums to 22 and stays 22, written 22/4. A raw total of 44 would stay 44, written 44/8. On the way down, 29, 38, 47, and 56 each become 11 and stop. An ordinary two-digit sum keeps going. 39 becomes 12, then 3.
Here is the mistake that hides a master. MICHAEL's vowels reduce to 6 and the consonants reduce to 9. If you add those already-reduced digits, 6 + 9 = 15, and 15 is not 33. The master lived in the raw total, 15 + 18 = 33. Always add the unreduced halves, or add every letter again from scratch.
Add the name a second time before you trust the paper. If the paper and the calculator disagree, look at Y first, then at a middle name you skipped.
The two halves of the same name
Soul Urge is the vowels only. Personality is the consonants only. Expression is both, added before either half is reduced. The three numbers are allowed to disagree. The vowels may want one thing. The whole name may be built for another. That gap is information. It is not a broken chart.

Expression does not use your birth date. The date has its own numbers, and they are calculated on their own rules.
When you want every letter checked for you, use the free Expression calculator. When you want the six core numbers read together, by hand, the next step is the Foundation Soul Blueprint. The Foundation Soul Blueprint is $11.11.
