Third, some trials report that the intensity of the experience correlates with how people rate it afterward. Participants who reported more complete ego dissolution or "mystical-type" experience also tended to rate the session as more personally meaningful. That's a correlation in the published data, not a demonstrated cause-and-effect relationship.

Most of these studies are small. Sample sizes are often limited, drawn from screened, self-selected volunteers who wanted to take part. That limits how far the results generalize to anyone else.

The settings are tightly controlled. Participants are prepared beforehand, supported by trained people during the session, and helped to process it afterward. Findings from that environment don't transfer cleanly to any other context.

Correlation isn't causation. The link between intense experience and later meaning shows up in the data, but researchers are still working out what drives what, and blinding is genuinely hard when people can usually tell whether they got the active drug.
